The future of commercial self-driving trucks will be discussed on September 13, 2017, at a hearing planned by the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee. The meeting will include the Chief Executive of Navistar International Corp and safety advocates. Currently, there is a controversy surrounding the issue of allowing commercial self-driving trucks to run on the roads. Some senators are in support of deploying self-driving trucks while trade unions like the Teamster's Union are against it. The Union has worked to exclude autonomous trucks from a proposed legislation to speed up the deployment of self-driving vehicles. Teamster's have also lobbied against efforts by states to make use of platooning technology.
The secretary of transportation, Elaine Chao has expressed concerns about the deployment of commercial self-driving trucks.
