The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has recently made an announcement regarding pending electronic logging device (ELD) implementation. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) imposed ELD mandate deadline is set at December 18, 2017, with seemingly no obstacles to hinder its implementation. The CVSA has announced that from April 1, 2018, law enforcement officials will place those commercial vehicles without an ELD in the out of service criteria (OOSC). Drivers are permitted to use Automatic On Board Recording Devices (AOBRDs) until December 16, 2019.
The deadline of April 1, 2018 is set to give carriers and shippers the time needed to install ELDs in their vehicles. The ELD OOSC deadline was set keeping in mind the ELD mandate becomes effective during holiday season and also to allot enough time for queries regarding compliance to be addressed.
