The major shift in buying and receiving consumer goods has affected industries such as food and automobile. The FTR conference held at Indianapolis this week affirmed that the impact will continue to grow in the coming decades and reshape freight movement. Economists predict that the industry will face tough challenges with shifts in the economy.
These economic disruptions will ultimately result in the trucking industry leaning on medium-duty trucks, vans, and less than truckload hauls. The use of dry vans will decline whereas reefers will still be in demand.
Economists also predict that in the coming years, consumers will start to increasingly depend on e-commerce platforms for buying and selling resulting in traditional markets and stores being replaced by virtual markets. As retailer giants like Amazon offer home delivery services, increases the demand for smaller vehicles.
Furthermore, consumers are also increasingly opting for online grocery shopping, which increases the demand for reefers or refrigerated trucks to assist in the delivery of fresh groceries.
